Valencia 0-2 Barcelona

BarcaVsValencia

Barcelona fielded a starting lineup absent of Coutinho or Paulinho, but overall the normal starters during league matches.

This Copa del Rey showdown was hosted by Valencia and they came out ready to give a good fight. As the match heated up Messi also served as a punching bag being taken down, had his shirt pulled over his head by the Valencia players and full on tackled by the goalkeeper. The first half was still overall dominated by Barcelona but Valencia looked dangerous and very capable to level the aggregate. Suarez had several shots to put any doubt of who would win to rest, but kept lacking a finish.

The second half Barça came out flying. Coutinho got called up off the bench and had an instant impact. The Brazilian got a great pass from Suarez after some great individual moves and Coutinho scored far post from a very narrow angle.

However, the match didn’t lack drama as the video review clearly shows back to back hand balls to stop the shot from Messi then Alba. Awhile after that Cillessen, the Barça keeper, pulls off a point blank save and the save of the game to keep the Valencia players from getting any hope that they could come back.

To finish the match off Rakitic scored a cool calm shot in front of goal. Again the assist came from Suarez who had an excellent match overall and is continuing to show his great form. FC Barcelona will now be going to the Copa del Rey finals to face off against Sevilla. Barça also have a match this weekend against Getafe and should win it to maintain their dominance in La Liga.

Disaster Averted at the Camp Nou, Coutinho Headlines

Coutinho Debut

Barcelona almost repeats history against Alaves having lost 2-1 against them last time they came to visit the Camp Nou during league play. Barça, undefeated in the league, went down early due to a counterattack goal shot by Guidetti in the 23rd minute. Having possession most of the game Barcelona were able to create great build up play that was easy on the eye but couldn’t translate that into shots on goal.

Barcelona wouldn’t get a goal until 72nd minute where Suarez got a hard shot on goal deflected in by an unlucky Alaves defender. With the draw seeming secure Barça kept on pushing looking for the second. Messi then proceeded to gift us an absolute beautiful free kick into the top right of the goal in the 84th minute.

Coutinho’s first start was an impressive performance overall. It looks like he felt right at home in the Barça offense. The display of one touch passes and overlapping runs was a beauty to behold. The final possession stats on the day were 78-22 percent, in favor of Barcelona. This is telling of the overall great defensive performance from the Alaves players who almost didn’t leave empty handed.

Barcelona’s next game will be on February 1st against Valencia in the Copa del Rey, the offense will need to find its shooting boots if they want to win the competition, we’ll see what the crew can muster up and talk about it here.
